Horse Play: Artful statues frolicking among public libraries
Author: Tammy Lane • First Posted: Thursday, July 01, 2010
Horse Play, an art collection of foals and horses designed by local students, is roaming free in public libraries all around town.
LexArts coordinated the public art project, in which kids decorated nearly 60 fiberglass statues just before the end of school. They will be on display through the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in October.
The smaller, lighter foals are set up inside the libraries, while the larger horses are outdoors.
Horse Play for Arts Education is an offshoot of Horse Mania 2010, which will hit the streets in mid-July. The kids’ statues will be sold at auction next year, with the proceeds divided between each school’s art program the Lexington’s Youth Arts Council and related programs.
In Horse Mania, local artists’ statues will be displayed around the city. Later, the sculptures will be auctioned to benefit sponsor-designated charities and LexArts public arts projects.
Watch for a special section July 15 in the Herald-Leader spotlighting both projects, including a map of display locations.
