In horse racing, the fastest mount often wins, but sometimes other contenders are also recognized for coming from behind and pulling away from the pack.

At the Jan. 25 school board meeting, several schools were honored for outstanding achievement on the latest Kentucky Core Content Tests. The equestrian theme of this year's districtwide celebration was "The Winners' Circle."

To ensure that students are learning at high levels, every school is supposed to reach a score of 100 no later than the year 2014. Five years ago, Fayette County had three schools with scores above 100. This year, a record 24 schools reached the benchmark. Each of these “Century Club” schools has a banner hanging in Norsworthy Auditorium at “It’s About Kids” Support Services.

The five latest schools to achieve this high honor were:

  • Liberty Elementary, with a score of 104.
  • Northern Elementary, 101.
  • Sandersville Elementary, 101.
  • Beaumont Middle, 102.
  • Jessie Clark Middle, 102.

The board also recognized schools that posted another year above the century mark (in the order that they first achieved the distinction):

  • In 2003: Veterans Park Elementary;
  • In 2004: Maxwell Spanish Immersion Elementary and SCAPA Bluegrass;
  • In 2006: Rosa Parks Elementary;
  • In 2007: Ashland, Cassidy, Clays Mill, Dixie, Glendover, Meadowthorpe, Morton Middle, Picadome and Stonewall Elementary;
  • In 2008: Athens-Chilesburg Elementary, Garden Springs, Julius Marks, Lansdowne, Squires and Yates.

In addition, the celebration singled out schools that achieved double-digit gains for a special Superintendent’s Award.

The first year that challenge was issued, only one school got an increase of more than 10 points. Since then, we have honored 16 more schools for that incredible feat, including these three on Monday night:

  • Cardinal Valley Elementary, which had a 16-point gain in scores this year;
  • Harrison Elementary, which posted a 17-point gain;
  • Mary Todd Elementary, which had an 11-point increase.

These schools will have their names added to a perpetual trophy at IAKSS and banners hung in Norsworthy Auditorium. They also received plaques and banners for their schools.
