Freshmen at Tates Creek High School got into the spirit of Shakespeare's time while studying "Romeo and Juliet."

Tates Creek High School freshmen spent about an hour hanging out in the 1500’s as part of their lesson on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” The school’s media center underwent a Renaissance makeover, complete with music, food and costumes to celebrate the bard’s 445th birthday.
Students immersed themselves in Shakespeare’s world by making quills out of ink pens and feathers, and goblets from Styrofoam and aluminum foil. They also took turns donning trappings of velvet, silk and gold braid and snapping memento photographs of one another.
“We try to bridge the generation gap in the way we present the story of Romeo and Juliet, and this is a good way to bring the time period closer to them,” said English teacher Traci Ransdell. “And everyone likes a good birthday party.”
The school’s media center usually hosts one activity or special event every month to help bring learning to life.
