Anticipation ruled the day as a record number of students streamed into classrooms across Fayette County Public Schools on Wednesday, Aug. 13. One highlight was the opening of three brand-new schools: Liberty, Sandersville and William Wells Brown elementaries.

Superintendent Stu Silberman, who dropped by several schools, is urging all teachers and staff to embrace the spirit of the Olympic Games in Beijing as they coach their kids toward excellence.

“The first day of school is always exciting!” Silberman said. “Just like the Olympics, we are going for the gold, and it is a great feeling carrying the torch into each of our schools as we start the 2008-2009 school year.”
