Unfamiliar sounds and colorful sights filled Bryan Station High School on Thursday as FCPS students and visitors made their way through the Regional World Language Festival.
In the auditorium, one session featured a flamenco demonstration.
“It’s a lovely, passionate, intense dance style,” said Chandra Nair, who teaches Spanish at Beaumont Middle School.
Nair performed a dance and then talked about the history of flamenco, which she explained incorporates elements from northern Indian, Jewish and Middle Eastern traditions. “Many cultures helped put this together,” she said.
That was the case, too, with the language festival.
Students carried “passports,” which were stamped as they visited the various stations. Among them were Japanese arts and crafts, Farsi mini language lessons and a German conversation table, along with artwork displays and language/cultural proficiency contests.
First-, second- and third-place winners in the academic competition advance to the State World Language Festival on May 10 at the University of Kentucky.
