Read Across America DayMarch 3, 2006 Several schools celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss on March 2, by taking part in Read Across America Day, sponsored by the National Education Association. Dixie Elementary School hosted several celebrity readers including Superintendent Stu Silberman, who read Oh, The Places You’ll Go! to students. Students were served a special Dr. Seuss lunch which featured Red Fish, Blue Fish sandwiches and a surprise visit by Thing 1. To end the day, the Dixie Family Resource Center hosted a birthday party in honor of Dr. Seuss. Yates Elementary School hosted a birthday bash for Dr. Seuss. First-graders wore their pajamas and listened to books read aloud by fifth-graders. Volunteers and staff read to students at Cardinal Valley Elementary School and several teachers dressed as Dr. Seuss characters. Students graphed green eggs versus white eggs and Kindergartners made Cat in the Hat hats. Squires Elementary School students dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss character and parents and local celebrities, including WLEX-TV sports anchor Alan Cutler read to them throughout the day. Each student also received a Cat in the Hat bookmark. Russell Cave Elementary School students dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss character and read Dr. Seuss books. The school also held a door decoration contest in honor of the day. Ashland Elementary School students and staff wore red, white, and blue and gathered in the hallway to read for 16 minutes - symbolizing how long it would actually take to read across America. Each student also received a free book and the school launched balloons with labels containing the name of a book attached asking the finder to consider reading it. Breckinridge Elementary School students were “decked out” in red and white in honor of Dr. Seuss. Students were served birthday cake during lunch to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday and guest readers from Eagle Creek Library stopped by to read to students. Last update: 3/10/2006 11:26:27 AM |
