Winburn Accelerated Cluster

The Winburn Middle School Accelerated Cluster is a grades 6-8 continuation gifted/talented program. The goal of the Accelerated Cluster Program at Winburn is to provide a challenging educational experience for all Gifted and Talented students, on a level commensurate with their abilities, and to have an impact on the community in which the program resides. The Cluster Program provides a continuing positive influence on its students and their families, the school and the community.

The core curriculum mandated by the state to fulfill KERA requirements will be compressed and adjusted as needed to meet the needs and interested of all students.  The differentiated curriculum will focus on modifying:

  • Content
  • Critical, creative, and problem-solving skills and processes
  • Research skills
  • Creation of products that will summarize and share the learning with others

Strategies for learning include independent study, parallel studies, and constructing connections using broad based issues and problems facing today’s society.

Eligibility to the Winburn Accelerated Cluster program requires a minimum of three (3) pieces of supporting documentation.  Elementary school accelerated cluster students with satisfactory progress are given priority placement.  A minimum score of 96th percentile total/partial battery score on a nationally normed standardized test of achievement AND a minimum score of 96th percentile by age on a nationally normed full scale test of mental ability. A district committee reviews all documentation for students to determine identification. Placements are then made according to space availability at the school and rank order by test scores. Students making satisfactory progess are given priority placement in the Henry Clay High School Liberal Arts Academy.
