At Locust Trace, students have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of agriculture, equine studies and veterinary science. Book learning becomes more meaningful as they work directly with animals and crops on our 82-acre site off Leestown Road. High school students can register for courses in these areas:
- Agriculture Power Mechanics
- Equine Studies
- Plant and Land Science
- Small and Large Animal Science
- Veterinary Assistant Program
In addition to classroom space, the property has a veterinary clinic, arena barn, livestock barn and community gardens.
Locust Trace grew out of an idea to expand the horticulture program at Eastside Technical Center. The property outside of town was acquired free from federal government surplus, and the farm opened in August 2011.
The mailing address is 242 Locust Farm Road, Lexington KY 40511.
What makes our school special
In FCPS, Locust Trace leads the way in pursuing net-zero energy usage and sitting lightly upon the land. The farm is minimally connected to water, sewage and electrical municipalities. Instead, Locust Trace relies on photovoltaic solar panels, constructed wetlands, on-site wells, cisterns, and passive solar and geothermal technology.
In addition, Locust Trace has been endorsed by the National Association for Veterinary Technicians in America to offer the approved veterinary assistant certification. It's one of only a handful of high school programs in the nation offering this certification.
