Grant terms
- Assurances
- Documents submitted and/or signed which assure the funder (usually a
government agency) that the applicant will comply with all legal
requirements 9e.g. Drug-free Workplace, Equal Opportunity, access for all,
specific requirements of the grant).
- Boilerplate
- Organizational information which is included in a proposal
- Direct costs
- Costs which are specific to the project (e.g. salary, project materials)
- Dissemination
- The results of the projects are distributed to others.
- Fixed charges
- Required cost above salary, e.g. unemployment insurance, workman's
compensation
- Fringe benefits
- "Optional" personnel costs above salary, e.g. health insurance
retirement
- Fundable
- Able and likely to be funded
- Grant Accountant
- The person responsible for coordinating all grant accounting functions
including: reviewing, consulting, tracking, and financial reporting
following the guidelines designated in the Grant Award Notification

- Grantmaker
- Agency which gives money
- Grantseeker
- Agency which seeks money
- Grant Writer
- The person responsible for coordinating all grant writing and research
functions, including finding funding sources, disseminating information,
writing proposals, developing budgets, providing technical assistance to
others writing proposals, and providing professional development
opportunities in this area.
- Indirect costs
- Costs which are difficult to itemize, because they are part of the normal
operating budget. Often this cost is negotiated between the applicant and
the funding agency.
- Matching Funds
- Sometimes referred to as Cost Share. The amount of money which the
applicant is spending on the project.
- Pre-Award
- The period before the actual award notification is received.
- Post Award
- The period after the actual award notification is received.
- Program Income
- Gross income earned by the recipient that is directly generated by a
supported activity or earned as a result of the award or incidentally.
- Program Officer
- Usually the first point of contact with a funding agency. The Program
Officer oversees the application process and manages the project for the
funding agency.
- Replication
- The project is able to be duplicated in other settings.
Acronyms
- CBD
- Commerce Business Daily. Announces Federal RFP's over $25,000 and upcoming
sales of government surplus.
- CFDA
- Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. List federal programs, guidelines,
etc.
- CFR
- Code of Federal regulations. Provides "explanations" and
"interpretations" of federal law.
- EDGAR
- Education (U.S.) Department General Administration Regulations.
Information for administering federal Department of Education grants.
- ESEA/IASA
- Elementary 7 Secondary Education Act, amended by the Improving American
Schools Act.
- FR
- Federal Register: Weekly updates on federal RFP's. Complements CBD.
- LEA
- Local Education Agency
- PC/PD
- Project Coordinator/Project Director. The person who manages a grant.
- PI
- Principal Investigator. The person who oversees a grant.
- RFA
- Request for Application
- RFP
- Request for Proposal
- SEA
- State Education Agency
