March 21, 2005

MEMBERS PRESENT: Phyllis Abernathy, Gail Grimes, Pam Allen (alt). - Paraeducators; Fay Isaacs – Secretary/Clerical; Bob Glass – Transportation; Jo Ann Bright – Custodial; Robin Stephens (alt.) – Food Service; Doug Botkin, Russ Southworth – Maintenance; Jim Adams- Technology.

ADMINISTRATORS PRESENT: Mary Browning, CFO; Elizabeth Simpson, Diana Shoop - Human Resources; Wayne Smiley – Financial Services.

OLD BUSINESS

In response to the concern that custodians were being told they have to monitor children at after school events, Mary Browning indicated that it had been addressed with the school directors that custodians should not be held responsible for the after-school supervision of children.

In response to the concern that custodians were being requested to do painting in the school buildings, Mary checked and responded that there are some guidelines being developed for painting within the school by custodians.

In response to the concern that a paraeducator felt they needed additional training, Mary indicated that this concern had been forwarded to Peggy Blanton, Director of Special Education. The need for more professional development for paraeducators is to be reviewed.

Mary indicated that the cabinet members, including school directors, had been instructed that hourly employees cannot stay over their scheduled work day without being paid.

In response to a concern brought forth by transportation, a new traffic safety sign has been posted at Paul Laurence Dunbar High.

NEW BUSINESS
MAINTENANCE

Russ Southworth asked why, with the budget situation being the way it is, the district is spending money to make and post signs in Spanish for IAKSS instead of at the schools. Mary responded that IAKSS gets a lot of Spanish speakers that come for information about ESL services and to the Department of Human Resources.

PARAEDUCATORS

Phyllis Abernathy indicated that there was a paraeducator who had specific concerns about the liabilities of working with Special Education children. Since his concerns were so specific, Mary will ask Peggy Blanton to get in touch with the Paraeducator to discuss his concerns.

SECRETARY/CLERICAL

Fay Isaacs indicated that there had been good response concerning the professional development that had been provided for the school bookkeepers, however, other secretary/clerical personnel are still requesting additional professional development. Mary indicated that additional professional development opportunities were under discussion.

Fay indicated that the new sign in front of IAKSS looked very nice. Mary agreed that it did look very nice and indicated that students from the Southside Center for Applied Technology built the sign and that students from the Eastside Center for Applied Technology will be landscaping the sign.

TRANSPORTATION

Scott LaFollette forwarded a comment via Bob Glass indicating that, on behalf of the Transportation employees, Scott wished to express gratitude to the Superintendent and the School Board for picking up the $15 cost for the upcoming mandated “S” endorsement on the drivers license’s for School Bus Drivers.

The next scheduled meeting is Monday, April 11, 2005 at 5:30 p.m.
