CLASSIFIED COUNCIL MINUTES

October 21, 2002

MEMBERS PRESENT: Bonnie Kelley, Secretarial/Clerical; Walter Kirk and Jo Ann Bright, Custodial; Russell Southworth and Doug Botkin, Maintenance; Leigh Ann Hogue and Gail Grimes, Instructional Assistant; H. LaVern Sallee, Food Service; Bob Glass and Carolyn Sparks, Transportation.

ALTERNATES PRESENT: Pam Smith, Instructional Assistant and Keith Carnes, Transportation

NEWLY ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES (To take office at the November meeting) Patty Reed, Secretarial/Clerical; Don Harris, Warehouse and Emma Gay Lewis, Food Service Alternate.

ADMINISTRATORS PRESENT: Dr. Duane Tennant, Superintendent, Mary Browning, Physical Support Services and Diana Marshall-Shoop, Human Resources.

OLD BUSINESS:

Bonnie had previously expressed a concern over the cost difference between certified employees and classified employees paying tuition for their children. Dr. Tennant said that the Board approved a change setting the tuition rate the same for both classified and certified employees.

Walter asked if a replacement was going to be allowed to work one or two days with him before he retires in December. Dr. Tennant said that he would take care of this and will get with Doug Marshall concerning the expense.

NEW BUSINESS:

Doug Botkin asked if the conflict with the Kronos time clock not matching district policy as written in the Classified Employee Handbook is being corrected. Mary Browning said that Bill Gay is taking care of making the time clock setting match actual policy on calculating time to the nearest quarter hour.

Pam Smith asked if there is a list for substitute interpreters, especially for the hearing impaired. Diana Marshall said she did not think so, but would check to see.

Leigh Ann wanted to thank all concerned who helped obtain the 180 days for the instructional assistants. She explained that there is now a rumor that some instructional assistant jobs may be eliminated or spread thinner as a result of the increase to 180 days. Dr. Tennant said the budget is not finalized and that no decision has been reached about specific positions. This is an economic issue and district leadership staff will be looking at everything and setting priorities before making a recommendation to the Board. It will probably be a year from now before anything is definite.

Gail Grimes expressed concern over available substitutes not being able to carry out the duties for the position in which they are subbing. Examples include not being able to climb stairs, not staying the in the classroom, or going to the library or break room and reading. Diana suggested that the people who are unable to climb stairs ask for schools where there are no steps. As for not doing their job, Dr. Tennant said to report this to the principal and the principal needs to follow up with Diana's office and the Superintendent. Diana also stated that the school could request that a particular sub not be sent back to the school if there has been a previous problem.

The next Classified Council meeting is November 18, 2002 at 5:30 PM in Conference Room A at Central Office.
