CLASSIFIED COUNCIL MINUTES

June 3, 2002

MEMBERS PRESENT: Monica Johnson, Secretarial/Clerical; Leigh Ann Hogue, Instructional Assistant; LaVern Sallee, Food Services; Linda C. Brewer, Technology; JoAnn Bright and Walter Kirk, Custodial; Doug Botkin and Russell Southworth, Maintenance.

ADMINISTRATORS PRESENT: Dr. Robin Fankhauser, Superintendent; Doug Marshall, Budget and Staffing; Mary Browning, Interim Physical Support; Elizabeth Simpson, Human Resources.

OLD BUSINESS: Dr. Robin Fankhauser said she met with Virginia Gregg and the letters that will be sent out for July 1st to Classified Employees will state that they will have to write down confirmation of hours worked. Dr. Fankhauser will get with Virginia Gregg and make sure she goes ahead and takes the lead in making sure Classified employees know that they need to put their real time down. This was discussed at the last meeting.

NEW BUSINESS: Walter Kirk asked if Terri Horn and Bill McGuire are getting paid as a Grade 18 and if the title is Custodian Trainer, why is it that when a new custodian is hired they do not train them? They want custodians to train them on their own time with no overtime. Dr. Fankhauser responded that she and Mary Browning will look into it. They will check with Terri Horn and Bill McGuire.

Leigh Ann Hogue said someone heard that Operations and Maintenance are going to be hiring the children of employees to work over the summer. Why are they being allowed to hire their children when people working 9.5 months need summer work? Dr. Fankhauser responded that employees need to apply and respond to advertising. Elizabeth Simpson said employees need to contact and send applications to Operations and Maintenance if they need or want to work during the summer.

LaVern Sallee asked some of us feel that Classified employees need more training on their jobs and is it imperative that all staff receives physical management training when needed. Can this be done? Leigh Ann Hogue responded that this training is offered several times a year in Special Education for Instructional Assistants. It is the employee's responsibility to sign up for this training. Dr. Fankhauser further responded by saying that this paid training is offered by Special Education to Instructional Assistants before school with half day training and half day working with teachers.

Leigh Ann Hogue asked when we go to the alternative calendar (if approved) will Instructional Assistants get to work 180 days? Dr. Fankhauser responded you must submit a letter to the Chairman of the Board, Harvey Wilkinson, copy to Superintendent, and a copy to Doug Marshall. It must be approved by the Board.

LaVern Sallee asked why was the budget for Food Service, which was recently reported by the Herald-Leader showing income well below expenditures? This puts food service in a bad position we say we are self-supporting, as far as the public is concerned. How were the figures derived and was it accurate? Dr. Fankhauser responded that the newspaper didn't report this accurately. They only picked up income from point-of-sale and nothing else. Food Service is self-supporting. Dr. Fankhauser will let the Herald-Leader know they made a mistake.
