MINUTES OF COUNCIL MEETING MEMBERS PRESENT: Bonnie Kelley, Secretarial/Clerical; Mike Baker, Operations; Duane Pickett, Warehouse; Judi Hale, Food Service; Doug Botkin, Maintenance; and Murlyn Toombs, Law Enforcement. ALTERNATE PRESENT: Walter Kirk, Custodial ADMINISTRATORS PRESENT: Dr. Robin Fankhauser, Superintendent and Doug Marshall, Budget Services. ADMINISTRATORS/SUPERVISORS PRESENT: Diana Marshall-Shoop, Human Resources This is the first time for the Classified Council to have a meeting in August. The Council voted in June-due to some schools having longer sessions-to begin in August instead of September. The Council discussed the transition of representatives. New representatives are to take office at the November meeting. It was also discussed that classifications which have two representatives and one alternate are to have only the regular representatives sit at the table when all three are present. For those classifications represented by one representative and one alternate, only the regular representative shall sit at the table. The alternates take the position of the regular representative when they are absent. The Guidelines/By Laws were discussed. Requests for any changes have been in previous minutes which are also available on the FCPS website. Suggested changes will be presented to the Council at the September meeting, when a draft will be distributed to Council members. OLD BUSINESS: At the June meeting, Murlyn Toombs had asked a question about the procedure when someone in a department is appointed to-as opposed to applying for-a new instructors position. At the time, the Superintendent had asked Wayne Smiley to look into this but Wayne was not present for the August meeting. Dr Fankhauser asked that we forward this to John Toye, Liz Simpson and Virginia Gregg. NEW BUSINESS: Walter Kirk asked if there is any truth in the rumor of the possibility of Arlington closing. Dr. Fankhauser replied that there are no plans to close Arlington. She stated that the district does have problems where we have "students with no seats" and "seats with no students." This situation and possible solutions are being discussed, but as far as closing Arlington, the answer is no. Judi Hale reiterated that the procedure for processing applications is too slow and asked if there is any possibility of honoring the previous request for the Food Service division to take the applications. Diana Marshall-Shoop said she will check out the possibility of Mary Browning handling part of the application process. Doug Botkin asked if a deduction for retirement is taken out of overtime (overscheduled) hours. Doug Marshall answered that the employee receives credit on the salary (the employee pays into retirement and the Board does the same) but no additional service credit is given. Judi asked why a truck driver vacancy was advertised at a grade 16 when other drivers are grade 13. This prompts current drivers to want to make a move for more pay. Dr. Fankhauser said she will refer this to Liz Simpson. The next Classified Council meeting will be Monday, September 18, 2000 at 5 p.m. Last update: 2/20/2004 4:00:47 PM |
