Pursuing a GED

Students who do not earn a high school diploma may instead get a GED -- also referred to as a General Education Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma or Graduate Equivalency Degree.

Teens between age 16 and 18 who choose to drop out of Fayette County Public Schools must wait 90 days before taking the GED. A student may request a waiver of the waiting period by writing to High School Director Mike McKenzie.

The student must also obtain a letter from the Office of Pupil Personnel stating he is officially not enrolled in FCPS.

Once a waiver is granted, the student will be contacted by Sheila Clark in Student Support Services to set up an appointment to complete the GED application. (If a student has been out of school more than 90 days, a waiver is not required.)

The student must bring the following documents to the appointment:

  • Withdrawal form, noting the last school attended
  • Picture I.D.

The appointment will be in the Office of Student Support, 701 E. Main Street, Suite 201; (859) 381-4326.
