Special programs in alternative facilities

Family Care Center:

This program, developed by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, provides child care and educational programming for mothers who are completing their GED or high school diploma on site. The child-care program serves children from birth through age 4. The program for 3- and 4-year-olds is a collaborative effort between LFUCG and FCPS. It serves a maximum of 40 children who meet eligibility based on household income or an identified special need.

FCPS teachers staff three high school classrooms. LFUCG provides transportation, meals and health services. The school district provides other services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. The program operates full day, five days per week, for 12 months. The National Association for the Education of Young Children accredits the Early Start classrooms.

Juvenile Detention Center:

This facility for incarcerated youths up to age 17 is operated under the Department of Juvenile Justice. The facility has 61 bed spaces with an average daily population of 55. All services to the youth are court-driven. When students enter the facility, they are enrolled in the Fayette County Public Schools. Classrooms are located within the facility. A regular day educational program is provided in addition to the Title I program, which provides materials, supplies, equipment, training and staff for school as well as summer tutorial program. Title I funds also provide for a transition program to assist the youth with a successful re-entry into their school and to prevent truancy.

Frenchburg Job Corps Center:

This residential alternative work, education and training program is for youths 16 to 21. Students can train for specific career goals and earn their GED or high school diploma at the same time. Students must meet the criteria for  free and reduced lunch and have their counselor's recommendation. Parents or guardians can contact the Lexington Job Corps Office at (859) 299-0050 to register a student at the center, which is in Menifee County.
