Truancy prevention initiatives

Non-attendance in school is a result of complex problems such as academic failure, peer pressure and family issues. Early intervention and education, using problem-solving teams that link home and school, can help improve students’ attendance, behavior and grades.

These three programs provide a team approach in linking interventions to students and/or their families:

The Truancy Intervention Program (TIP) is implemented at the elementary level and works directly with the parents.

The Truancy Diversion Program (TDP) assists middle school students and ninth-graders who are at risk of being charged with a truancy offense because of too many unexcused absences and/or tardies.

The Truancy Reduction Intervention Program (TRIP) provides educational seminars for high school students who are identified as truant by law and for their parents.

The overall goal is to stop the truancy and provide support for the kids and their families such as education, counseling, tutoring and monitoring of the student’s attendance and progress.
