Health & Safety
Student insurance
Fayette County Public Schools does not provide medical insurance to cover injuries to students. A Student Accident Insurance Brochure goes home with students on the first day of school. Several plans are offered, and the premiums are reasonable. If families have other medical coverage, this insurance is secondary. If families do not have other insurance, this plan becomes primary. Premium payments go directly to the K&K Insurance Group.

Health records
Schools maintain cumulative health records for all students. Each record includes the initial medical exam and screening tests related to growth and development, vision, hearing and scoliosis, and findings and recommendations from doctors and dentists.
School nurses
Four elementary schools (Arlington, Harrison, Tates Creek and William Wells Brown) have county health department clinics on campus, and four others (Ashland, Cardinal Valley, Liberty and Russell Cave) have nursing clinics. The rest of the district’s schools share about two dozen nurses on a rotation basis. While on campus, nurses perform vision and scoliosis screenings, review immunization records and physical exams, provide acute care in emergency situations and see students with minor health complaints. Parents should notify the school nurse if their child has medical concerns.

Swine flu
FCPS works closely with the Lexington Fayette County Health Department to ensure we are on top of any developments in our community related to swine flu.
Wintry weather
Your children's safety is our No. 1 priority when winter weather turns nasty. Our policies allow for delaying or cancelling school if necessary; we also can dismiss school early.
District policies
This manual contains more details on the following and other FCPS guidelines.
Tobacco-free
FCPS prohibits students' possession or use of tobacco products in buildings, on grounds and on field trips. The exception is the use of tobacco on school grounds during athletic contests or other outside events.
No-tolerance policy
Any student possessing a deadly weapon shall be suspended from school, and the principal will report the incident to the Board of Education for an expulsion hearing. The principal will also file an incident report with the Division of Law Enforcement.
Visits in school
The district has installed security equipment in schools to help avert possible danger resulting from unauthorized or unknown persons. Each school has cameras and a buzzer system to monitor individuals entering the building. In addition, students are not permitted to visit other schools or have guests during the school day without written permission, prior to the visit, from the principals of both schools.
Disruptive bus riders
Riding a school bus is a privilege. Students who violate pertinent rules may be subject to disciplinary action.
